Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 31, 2003
FROM FATHER GERRY’S DESKHi Everybody! The very strong and seemingly harsh words Jesus has for the Pharisees in today’s gospel are, in fact directed to all of us. The Lord does not condemn human traditions and practices. It is because they presented them to the people as teachings coming from God. Yes, we certainly have to practice good hygiene in our eating habits, but Jesus warns us that the real defilement that will destroy our spiritual, and therefore our eternal health, comes from within. No matter how much evil we are confronted with, we can, with our own goodwill and supported by God’s grace, overcome them. It is the evil intentions from within us that will corrupt us. That is why He urges us to clean up our innermost selves, fill ourselves with goodness and be motivated by the desire to do God’s will at all times and in all circumstances. If our hearts are set on pleasing God then our actions will, of necessity be good actions, but if we are motivated by the wrong intentions, we run the risk of hypocrisy, showing a good exterior while inside we are filled with evil, in other words, living a lie! No one wants to be labeled a hypocrite, not even by ourselves, and very specially so by Jesus. God Bless You One and All ……. Father Gerry
STEWARDSHIP SUGGESTIONReflect on your gifts, talents, comforts, and the support system of family and friends, and tell yourself constantly that all these come from God to be appreciated and used to give Him honor and glory, then, work out for yourself how to do so!
STEWARDSHIP INITIATIVE: Sunday Evening Vespers Vespers, The Evening Prayer of the Church, with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, are celebrated twice monthly at 6:00 p.m. – on the 2nd Sunday of the month at St. Peter Church and the 4th Sunday of the month at Sacred Heart Church. This is an opportunity to join together in prayer and spend a little more time with the Lord than we are obliged to do. Everyone is welcome to join us: Sunday, September 14 at St. Peter ChurchSunday, September 28 at Sacred Heart Church
AUGUST COLLECTION for the FISH FOOD BANKThis Weekend - Request: “Cereal” or “School Supplies” Collection boxes are at all the doors of St. Peter’s Church and front entrance of Sacred Heart Church. Thank you for your continued support. CONFESSIONS: Thursday before First Friday, September 44-4:30 p.m. Sacred Heart Church
A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE …..Today, Jesus warns us that what defiles us comes from “within.” Families need to worry about “outside influences,” but we should also be concerned about “inside influences.” The values that children carry for a lifetime are learned at home. That’s the good news. It could also be the bad news!

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) names the process by which interested persons are gradually awakened to discern if God is calling them to become members of the Catholic Church. The RCIA journey is primarily a journey of faith: “From the awareness of stirring of faith and curiosity within one’s heart Through all those stages of asking and seeking, Through beginning involvement with Catholic people, Through hearing the Gospel proclaimed and by faithful reflection and prayer on this Word of God. Through study and discussion about the Catholic experience, Through doubts and hesitations, Through discernment of God’s call for them as individuals, Through steps of commitment, Through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist), to a life of faith, love and justice in communion with Catholics throughout the world.” We will begin this process in September. For information, call St. Peter Rectory at 482-4433 or fill in the form below, drop it in the collection basket, and someone will contact you.
