FROM FATHER GERRY’S DESK

Hi Everybody!

Jesus tells those who followed Him around because He had fed them so miraculously in the desert, that He is our bread of Life.  In saying this He used an idiom the people could easily understand.  For them, bread was the staple, basic food without which they could not and would not do, so that anything or anyone that enriched their lives in anyway was compared to the nourishment they received from bread!  He is almost at pains trying to make them understand that, although He had physically fed them with bread and fish, that they had to look for much more than bodily nourishment from Him.  He came to nourish us with a food that would give life that will last for all eternity.  They failed to or refused to understand this, and later when He would tell them that His body is the bread that they needed to eat to have everlasting life they turned away and would no longer walk with Him, listen to Him or try to believe in Him.  Jesus nourishes us in Word and in Sacrament.  His word that is preached to us is the nourishment we need to know Him well so that we can mould ourselves in His likeness.  The Eucharist is the food that sustains and supports the life He won for us on the cross and which we received in baptism.  He truly enriches our lives in a way that no earthly nourishment or learning can.  Read the Gospels and reflect on them constantly to nourish the human intellect and will with thoughts and words of Jesus.  Celebrate and receive the Holy Eucharist, it is Jesus Himself who is food for life and eternity.

God Bless You One and All ……. Father Gerry

STEWARDSHIP SUGGESTION

In your parish are you tired of seeing the same people doing

everything?  So are they!

STEWARDSHIP INITIATIVE:  Sunday Evening Vespers

Vespers, The Evening Prayer of the Church, with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, are celebrated twice monthly at 6:00 p.m. – on the 2nd Sunday of the month at St. Peter Church and the 4th Sunday of the month at Sacred Heart Church.  This is an opportunity to join together in prayer and spend a little more time with the Lord than we are obliged to do.  Everyone is welcome to join us:

August 10 at St. Peter Church

August 24 at Sacred Heart Church

A Family Perspective

Consider the many hours spent buying and preparing food.  In the gospel today Jesus cautions us:  “Do not work for the food that perishes.”  Jesus is challenging us to spend time each day “on the works of God,” so that our family doesn’t spiritually starve.

O Prince of peace, we humbly ask your protection

for all our men and women in military service.

Give them unflinching courage to defend with honor,

dignity and devotion, the rights of all who are

imperiled by injustice and evil.

Be their rock, their shield, and their stronghold

and let them draw their strength from you.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

PRO LIFE MINISTRY

“I’m distressed enormously by the fact that the slope of evolution in science appears to be steadily upward and that the slope of evolution for human kindness and beneficence and morality seems almost not to have moved at all.”  -Daniel Foster, MD, Presidential Council on Bioethics, April 25, 2002

Jesus said: “Love thy neighbor.”  Who are our neighbors?  They are relatives, friends and strangers alike.  How can we love them all?  We can if we remember that we were all created in the image and likeness of God.

RACHEL ROSARY  The St. Peter/Sacred Heart Pro Life Committee will be praying the Rachel Rosary on Monday, August 4, at 7:00 p.m. and the first Monday of every month in the chapel at Sacred Heart Parish Center (across from the Rectory).  The Rosary is an intercessory prayer for the victims of Post-Abortion Syndrome as well as prayer for those contemplating an abortion.  Please join us each month to pray this beautiful rosary.  The rosary is called Rachel Rosary because of the following reading from Jeremiah 31:15-17:  “In Ramah is heard the sound of moaning, of bitter weeping!  Rachel mourns her children, she refuses to be consoled because her children are no more.  Thus says the Lord:  Cease your cries of mourning, wipe your eyes.  The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward.  There is hope for your future.”

MISSIONARY WEEKEND – AUGUST 9 and 10

This year our parishes will once again host a missionary priest as part of the Mission Cooperative Plan of the Archdiocese.  This gives us the opportunity to share directly, through our prayers and offerings, in the mission Jesus gave to us, His Church, to go into the whole world to preach the Good News.  We will be visited next weekend, August 9th and 10th by Father Abraham MCBS from India, a member of the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament.

“TO WALK WITH THOSE WHO MOURN”  Facilitator Training For Parish Bereavement Teams Saturday, September 13 – 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Family Life Office, 412 Ridge Road, Hamden.  Presenter:  Sister Mauryeen O’Brien, O.P.  This is a training workshop for potential facilitators of a nine-week program (“New Day”) or an ongoing support group for the bereaved, to prepare them to aid others to work through the tasks of grief.  At the end of the training, participants will have the capacity to facilitate grief ministry within a parish setting.  (Please bring brown bag lunch – drinks provided).  Registration fee of $10 includes the cost for the training manual.  If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact Father Gerry at 482-4433.

CCD REGISTRATION  Students who have already been in our program and are returning in the fall should have already received a re-registration form in the mail.  The deadline to return these forms was June 30th.  If you are planning to return to our program in the fall, and have not done so already, please submit your registration forms directly to Sr. Annette at St. Peter School, 28 St. John Place, Torrington as soon as possible.  If you did not receive a form in the mail, you may call Sister at 489-8735.  A registration for new students will be held at the beginning of September.

NEW PARISH CENTER KITCHEN  A sincere thank you to Mr. Joseph Schippani, one of our parishioners, who volunteered to repaint the Parish Center kitchen.  He did a fantastic job, and with the new stove and refrigerator donated by Mr. Mark Reznick and the installation of a new floor, the kitchen looks just wonderful!  Thank you to all.

PARISH HALL GETS A FACELIFT  The Homefront committee chose to repaint Sacred Heart Parish Hall as their project this year.  Under the coordination of Matt and Cathie Mastrogiovanni and with the help of many parishioners and members of the Youth Ministry and Confirmation programs, our hall looks so much brighter and cleaner!  Our sincere thanks!!

STEWARDSHIP NOTE  You will notice in the above two thank you’s, how parishioners are making a difference through stewardship, offering their time, talent, and treasure to make our parish the best it can be.  Do you see a need in the parish you can help with?  Do you have a talent you can offer?  Call Stewardship chairman Tom McCoy at 489-2688 or speak to one of the priests and let us know.  Remember, God has blessed us with so much, and previous generations of parishioners have left us this beautiful parish as their gift to us.  Let us do the same for the future generations of Sacred Heart parishioners!  Let us show God our gratitude by sharing our time, talents and treasure with the parish now and in the future.

SANCTUARY CANDLE

Is being burned in memory of

Jacqueline Sarri and Emil DeMure.

THANK YOU!!!  Our St. Peter Hall was recently repainted as an Eagle Scout project coordinated by Matthew Grossi, one of our parishioners.  Our sincere thanks to Matt, his parents Tony and Mary, his brothers Stephen and Paul, and all the other Boy Scouts and friends who helped Matt transform the hall so beautifully.

HOMEFRONT SPRUCES UP RECTORY  Our Homefront committee took on a couple of projects in the rectory this year, repainting one of the suites to prepare for Fr. Weaver’s arrival, and rejuvenating our rectory meeting room and installing a restroom facility in the basement, in order to make this room more useful for the meetings of parish committees and organizations.  Our sincere thanks to the coordinating committee:  Ron & Anita Martin, Tom & Carmy Tromba, Al & Joan Colangelo, and Tom Mirsky; professionals Mario Sartori (plumbing), Jim Morro (electrician), Tom Germano (flooring), and Ed Amoroso (framing & sheetrock); and for the entire cadre of volunteers who descended on the rectory like worker bees that first Saturday in May, to transform these areas into functional and beautiful spaces!  This is stewardship at it’s best!  Do you have some extra time to spare?  A talent to offer?  Our parish and school was founded and handed down to us through the good stewardship of St. Peter parishioners over these past 96 years.  Please help us to preserve it to  hand on to the future generations of St. Peter parishioners through your generosity of TIME, TALENT and TREASURE!

our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.
