29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 19, 2003

FROM FATHER GERRY’S DESK

Hi Everybody!

The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.  This is the Lord’s message to his disciples when they were looking for places of honor in his kingdom.  James and John wanted to sit right up there next to him.  Service to others normally invokes admiration and may at times result in receiving rewards and honors.  But that should never be the reason for the service we render.  The Lord sets himself up as our example to follow.  He came to serve and his service was life-giving, even though it would end in his death.  But, his very death was his greatest service to all of humanity.  And, that service led to his glorious resurrection!  So, we need to take our cue from Jesus, not the rulers of the world.  That is so difficult to accept when we see that even the Church, in her leaders have been caught up in the same trappings as world leaders and princes!  We need to look beyond those trappings and accept that they are really the servants of God’s people.  To be of service means above all to make ourselves available, whether it may be to children or parents, neighbors, or strangers, our community or our Church.  Following the example of the Lord, it must be a service that does not look for a reward, but finds its reward in the service itself.  Through faith such service is actually rendered to God.

God Bless You One and All ……. Father Gerry

Your gift supports:  Mission priests who bring the love of Jesus to the poor living in remote villages and city barrios; Religious Sisters and Brothers who offer the Lord’s healing compassion to refugees, the sick and orphans; Catechists who proclaim the Gospel to the poorest of our human family, the message of the hope and peace that only Christ can give. Thank you and God bless you for your support.

A Family Perspective

Like James and John in today’s gospel, when couples get married and become parents they often “Don’t know what they are asking.”  Today, Jesus teaches us that we become spouses and parents “to serve.”  If you feel like a “servant” at home, you are doing it right!
