Textbook

The Call to Faith series published by Harcourt Press is the Textbook used in our K-6 Faith Formation Program. This series is highly recommended by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Call to Faith was developed around the following three principles:

  • Catechesis (religious instruction) is a lifelong process. If we keep our mind and heart open to our Lord we can continue to grow deeper in our knowledge of our faith throughout our life.

  • All baptized members of the Church share the responsibility of catechesis.
Luke 11:33 "No one who lights a lamp hides it away or places it (under a bushel basket), but on a lampstand so that those who enter might see the light." We are called to share the gift of faith that we have received.

  • The goal of catechesis is to shape the students into "disciples who act with the mind and heart of Christ".

The Call to Faith series is rich in Church Doctrine and Tradition. Scripture passages are integrated into each chapter giving students and their families the opportunity to explore the Word of God each week. Each lesson includes a story of a person of faith whose life gives witness to the particular theme being taught in that lesson. A useful resource for families is the Family Faith Page which concludes each lesson.

The same seven catechetical themes are covered each year from Kindergarten through grade Five. The following themes are covered in the same order in each grade:

Revelation/Holy Trinity/Jesus Christ/The Church
Morality/Sacraments/The Kingdom of God

Each theme is presented in one Unit, divided into three chapters. In addition, Call to Faith includes Seasonal Lessons on Ordinary Time, Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter.

The Catechist's Manual includes a catechist formation section for each lesson emphasizing reflection and prayer prior to lesson preparation. Several resources are identified as well as a catechism connection section, optional activities and ideas for reaching all learners in the classroom.

With Jesus Christ, the Savior, as its source of meaning and purpose, the school strives to awaken, encourage, and enlighten students in an environment centered on the Roman Catholic faith. By developing pride in self and work, students are provided the academic foundation necessary to make positive contributions to society.
